The rundown
South Portland Sailing Center, Maine's only ASA sailing school, runs American Sailing 103 Basic Coastal Cruising as a blended course: one day of online theory, then two days on the water in Casco Bay. Building on ASA 101, it teaches you to skipper an auxiliary-powered keelboat by day in moderate conditions, covering boat systems, engine operation, docking, anchoring, intermediate sail trim, coastal navigation and weather. Pass it and you earn an internationally recognized ASA certification.
